April is Alcohol Awareness month and I thought the last day of the month would serve as a potent reminder! *big grin*

There seems to be a love-hate relationship with Alcohol that dates back to its discovery and intentional fermentation thought to be ~10,000 BC. Alcoholic beverage is common in many cultures, religions and often time associated with geographical locations and social status.

Well, fast forward to 2014, alcohol is now regarded as a legal drug by many.  There are consistently mixed messages that alcohol is bad for you, then alcohol is good for you, then alcohol is bad for you. Which is it? You actually get to decide whether that alcoholic beverage is “worth it”. This serves only to educate, clarify terminologies and re-emphasize some areas of concern regarding alcohol.

But first, you must know the recommended allowable/maximum daily alcohol intake – for women it is 2-3 units per day and for men it is 2-3 units per day. What is a unit? 8 grams or 10 mL of pure alcohol…no matter how diluted. The unit differs per type of drink:alcohol-serving-sizes

  • Pint of strong Lager/Beer  = 5% alcohol = 3 units
  • Pint of standard Beer = 3.5% alcohol = 2 units
  • Standard glass of wine(275mL)  = 12% alcohol = 2 units
  • One measure/shot of spirit (25mL) = 1 unit

The Bad and the Ugly: Diseases associated with alcohol consumption include (but is not limited to):

  • Brain – cause depression and thought to associated with epilepsy
  • Cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, bowel, stomach, liver cancer, etc.,
  • Liver – cirrhosis and fatty liver disease  directly linked to high alcohol intake
  • Pancreas – pancreatitis (infection/irritation of the pancreas)
  • High blood pressure – may lead to stroke
  • Heart Problems are linked to excessive drinking
  • Driving under the influence or while intoxicated (DUI/DWI) – Absolutely BAD!
  • The list goes on and on…can you think of a few others?

How long before the Alcohol leaves your body…

The Good: While medical advice is against alcohol, there exists research evidence that “some” amount of alcohol may actually be good for you:

  • Heart Disease
  • Common cold
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis

There are some absolutes – no alcohol while pregnant, do not drink and drive, my cognizant of your family history and alcoholism, consider the medications you are taking if contraindicated, etc., My rule remains the same: Everything in moderation AND always think safety first!
