Casual Conversations – Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

Wonderful Wednesday or Terrific Thursday to you! I enjoy my career … and absolutely love helping others when I can. I cannot resist the need to poke fun sometimes and love to share about my “casual encounters.”

I injured my rotator cuff several months ago … so I am currently going through Physical Therapy (PT) and considering surgery next year.  While at PT, I was Blessed to have yet another casual conversation (CC);

CC: Dr. McGann … May I ask you a quick question? It will only take 30sec

Me: (to the therapist) Did you tell her my fee?

PT: No … oh … she charges $200/hr

Me: And that’s the discounted rate too! (giggling)

CC: Ok. It will only take 30 secs though (smiling)

Me: (stopping my PT … I needed a break anyway). No question ever really take 30 sec (big grin) No problem … Lets hear it…you have my attention  (looking up from the balance ball – serious now). How may I help?

CC: Well … I wanted to ask about neuropathy.  If Neurontin was prescribed for something else…can it be taken for chemotherapy induced neuropathy?

Me: Certainly! Neurontin is very commonly used in the treatment of Peripheral neuropathy. You should talk to the Medical Oncologist though…just in case there is something else s/he would like to prescribe, but starting off with Neurontin (Gabapentin) is ok.

CC: I thought so. Well, what dose should be use?

Me: Uhm … I do not recall. I think its started at 300mg tid … but honestly, I cannot recall. Let me put through a phone call for verification…

This led to several calls … and a promise to blog about chemotherapy induced Peripheral Neuropathy.
