Thanksgiving is here…yeah!  For some its about the food, for others its about family and for some its about the shopping afterwards or football game. The tradition of asking everyone to name 2-3 christmas-vs-thanksgivingthings they are thankful for at the dinner table, seem to have fallen by the way side. Worse yet, when asked what they are grateful for, many seem to stumble about what to say. The horror!

Learning to be grateful, can start by looking at your life, where you are now, where you have been, the things you overcame this year, the things you were allowed to do this year, etc., See video below for motivation.  A varied sample of what I am GRATEFUL for include:

  • Waking up this morning – I recently heard of someone in my age group, who came home tired from work. Went upstairs to take a nap before dinner and just never woke up…dying in her sleep.
  • (What I think are…) My ugly toes – I recently did a presentation on healthcare cultural competence in taking care of disabled veterans. There are many wounded warriors who are able to function with the assistance of prosthesis…what do I have to complain about?thankful-printable
  • My truck – I grew up in the islands and walking over a mile to catch the bus to school was the norm. A sturdy vehicle that can handle well in the rain and snow, is indeed a blessing!
  • Relationship with my Mom and Dad – a miracle, but I think they have finally come around to realize I am an adult (smile). Our relationship and understanding have grown in leaps and bounds over the past decade.
  • Ability to give – though it is often said it is better to give than to receive, many have the desire to give, but is not able to do so. I thoroughly enjoy being a blessing to others.
  • Travel opportunity – visiting 6 international countries this year, mostly for work, but able to take a few vacation days to enjoy the area too. WOW, absolutely awesome!

What are you grateful for? Still not sure? See the video below.

From the Physician’s Desk … Happy Independence Day!

Today, we celebrate the Independence of our Great Nation…but often we forget to celebrate our “own” independence. The Freedom to make wise choices … and to be free from bondages, of all forms (fear, depression, anxiety, illness, phobias…and the list goes on and on). Please take a moment to slowly absorb and enjoy this poem. I wish you Independence from all your bondages … as those too, can lead to DIS-EASES … diseases.

Be as independent as DESIDERATA  recommends…

————————-

A few weeks ago, I had the distinct pleasure of serving those in need by working with the Homeless Ministry of my church in partnership with a local Korean church.  Together we provided a warm meal, box lunches (for later), clothing, and basic needs items, such as toiletries. We also visited the local shelter and did likewise. I recall there was one person in particular who did not want any of the food because FISH was the preference (not Beef, Turkey or Ham). For exactly 2seconds, my mind drifted to thinking, “Seriously! I guess you are truly not hungry then, because ….”  Then I paused. I turned the mirror towards me and asked,

Just How Grateful Am I?

How Grateful are you?

(Grateful = warmly or deeply appreciative of kindness or benefits received; thankful.)

As I drove home that afternoon, I started to “verbally” thank God for all that I have … and in so doing, I realized that I have neglected to give Thanks so many, many, many, many times…and that I was truly no different than the homeless person demanding seafood.  I want this, I want that, I want, I want, I, I, I, … Hhhmm. So I started giving thanks, and all the way home, I listed things I was grateful for … and there were many things to be thankful for…especially as in each scenario, I could think of many family, friends, and associates who had problems in that particular area…

Home oxygen

  1. I held my breath … for as long as I could…then exhaled. I am Thankful for the ability to breathe on my own, without the need for supplemental Oxygen. I have no respiratory disorders/diseases.
  2. I placed my hand over my heart and felt it beating…I was doing nothing to control the beats. Yet it thumped away, rhythmically all on its own. I am Thankful that my heart does such a great job…and I do not have to refuel, or be responsible to keep it going. I have no cardiac disorders or diseases.
  3. I paused…but my thoughts kept coming. Telling me what to write though being interrupted by thoughts of daily chores that must be attended to…and so many other things on my “To Do” list. Hhhmm…I need to meditate to quieten my mind. BUT how awesome it is that I have the ability to think and make my own decisions … good or bad…and have the ability to REMEMBER…

And the list goes on and on…

We are all guilty, to some degree, of not being grateful for our many gifts and Blessings. Consider making a list of the things you are grateful for … great and small. AND do not forget to tell those in your life just how much you do love them and that you are thankful they are in your life! No one is promised tomorrow … please consider telling them today!

Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!
